MICHAEL GOONAN, M.ED., M.SC., RCT-C

My approach to counselling therapy is rooted in the fertile soil of sophia perennis, or perennial wisdom.  In recent years, research in psychology and neuroscience has increasingly validated this ancient wisdom, which is present in the inheritance of all cultures.  The field of positive psychology is focused on the project of eudaemonia, Aristotle’s concept of human flourishing, rather than on medical notions of pathology. Meanwhile, researchers such as Richard Davidson and Andrew Newberg have documented numerous benefits of spiritual and religious practices such as meditation and prayer.

As a counsellor, my goal is to help you apply ancient wisdom to your modern life from a person-centred framework rooted in your unique situation, culture and values.   Through my formal and informal studies in philosophy and world religions, I have come to see meaning as the most important factor in human wellbeing.  My integrative counselling approach draws on humanistic, existential and Jungian theories while making special use of mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) methods.

In my previous life as a teacher, I travelled and worked in diverse settings including the Czech Republic, South Korea, Australia, and a remote First Nation in Northwest Ontario.  This has given me an international perspective and a special appreciation for many cultures and ways of being.  Not all cultures view wellness in the same way, and therapeutic approaches that work in one cultural context may not be well suited to another.  I am endlessly fascinated with the many faces of human happiness and I am committed to helping each client find a unique way.  I promise to always be curious about your path, and to provide an atmosphere of unconditional positive regard for deep explorations of your mind and purpose.
